A Message from Bishop Silva

To: Parishioners of the Manoa-Punahou Catholic Community
c/o Reverend Gordian Carvalho, Pastor

Dear Friends:

Peace be with you!

You may be aware that your pastor, Father Gordian Carvalho, will celebrate his 70th birthday on July 30, 2018.  At age 70, priests in our diocese are allowed to retire, if they wish.  Father Gordy, however, has decided that he would like to retire in January, 2019.  We thank him for all he has done, and we wish him well as he prepares for retirement. (By the way, a retired priest remains fully a priest, but he is relieved of the administrative responsibilities of a pastor.) And we thank all of you for your faithful witness to Jesus!

It occurs to me that this is an opportune time to explore the idea of whether Sacred Heart and St. Pius X Parishes should be de-clustered after more than a decade of sharing a pastor and other resources.  If de-clustered, each parish would be assigned its own pastor in January 2019.  I have no preconceived preference for what should be done, but I have put together a team to work with you the next several months to look at the idea of wether it is better to leave the two parishes clustered or to de-cluster them upon Father Gordy’s retirement.  I trust you will work with the team in honestly looking at the issue to see which is the best structure for the future, so that the parish(es) and all related ministries can be even more faithful to our mission to evangelize.

The team members are: James Walsh (Chair), Director of Pastoral Planning; Kristin Leandro, Director of the Office for Safe Environment; Reverend Rheo Ofalsa, Director of Vocations; and Alicia Nakamoto, Parish & School Accounting Manager.  I thank them for their generosity in undertaking this project, and I pray the outcome will be in accord with the will of God and for the good of all who live in the Manoa-Punahou area.  Please keep this endeavor in your prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
